Sport Clubs

Whether you were active in sports in high school or have never participated before, NIU has a club for you! With more than 700 active student participants, our sport clubs are a great way to get some exercise, make new friends and gain leadership experience.

Clubs hold practices, tournaments and demonstrations at various locations on campus. Some clubs also travel to activities at other colleges and universities.

Joining a Club

You can join a sport club if you're a fee-paying NIU student or an NIU employee who is a faculty/staff Recreation member. No experience is necessary. Clubs hold practices for skill and team development.

Participation in some clubs is free, while other clubs require individual donations to cover the cost of equipment, facility rentals and supervision, instruction and travel.

Starting a Club

Any student or group of students can start a sport club, even if the sport is already recognized as an intercollegiate sport at NIU. Sport clubs must be recognized by the Student Involvement and receive approval from Recreation.

To start a sport club, the following is required at a minimum:

  • President
  • Vice president
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • NIU faculty or staff advisor
  • Written constitution and operating plan

Complete an application to start a new sport club.

Clubs must follow the rules and regulations that govern all Student Involvement-recognized organizations, as well as those established by Recreation. All clubs must submit paperwork at the beginning of each semester to begin and continue as a recognized organization.
