Accessibility

NIU Recreation encourages and supports the participation of individuals with disabilities in all programs and services. To facilitate opportunities for people with and without disabilities to engage in leisure pursuits together, we provide services including, but not limited to, staff support, sign language interpreters and adaptive equipment.

We're always looking for more sports and services to add to our lineup. If there's something you'd like us to offer, please email us at recreation@niu.edu.

Adaptive Recreation

We continue to expand programming to meet the needs of our students and members. At the Student Recreation Center, you'll find Cybex Total Access weight selector stations to train the upper body. In addition, a SciFit Pro II upper arm ergometer is located in the cardio and strength training room. Personal trainers are also available to help all students and members with one-on-one fitness needs and personal exercise programs.

Services, Training and Accessible Recreation (STAR) Program

We partner with the Disability Resource Center to provide programs and services to students with disabilities. Look for more programs and services to be added during future semesters.

We currently offer:

  • One-on-one fitness assessments and program designs (free)
  • One-on-one equipment orientations and training sessions (free)

To get started, email nsummerfelt2@niu.edu or jperez40@niu.edu to schedule an appointment.
