Scholarships and Grants

We offer several annual competitive faculty associate research and travel grants. We also offer research and travel conference grants for graduate students. We also promote the Student Engagement Fund, which brings faculty associates and undergraduates together in collaborative research projects.

In addition, we offer these other awards and scholarships.

Robert Marcelin Memorial Award

The Robert Marcelin Memorial Scholarship is a $500.00 scholarship endowed by the former Ameritech Corporation to honor the life and memory of their co-worker and former Northern Illinois University student, Robert Marcelin. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide assistance to an NIU undergraduate student with at least one Latino/a parent.

The scholarship is awarded annually. Applications are due in January, and the recipient is announced in May. The scholarship recipient's award goes towards defraying their account with the University unless no monies are owed. This is a merit-based scholarship.

Deadline for Application: is March 1, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

The scholarship recipient will be notified of their award before May 3, 2019

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or better
  • Must be enrolled full-time at NIU
  • Must be able to demonstrate progress towards degree completion

Applicants must return and sign the application, submit a two-page personal statement, which includes their engagement with the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) and provide a copy of their unofficial transcript for their application to be considered complete.

Center for Latino and Latin American Studies Scholarship

The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) Undergraduate Scholarship is a $500 scholarship for a student with a declared minor in Latino and Latin American Studies.

Deadline for Application: March 1, 2019, at 4:30 p.m.

The scholarship recipient will be notified of their award before May 3, 2019.

The scholarship is awarded annually. Applications are due in March and the recipient is announced in May. The scholarship recipient’s award goes towards defraying their account with the university unless no monies are owed. 

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must have a declared minor in Latino and Latin American Studies
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or better
  • Must be enrolled full-time at NIU
  • Must be able to demonstrate progress towards degree completion

For your application to be considered complete, you must submit:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Copy of unofficial transcript
  • Statement of interest in the minor and engagement with CLLAS.
  • 1 confidential letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with your work as a student and interest in Latino and Latin American Studies

NIU DREAM Scholarship

The NIU DREAM Scholarship is open to all undocumented students attending NIU. The award amounts may vary depending on student's financial need. 

Deadline for Application: April 22, 2019, at 4:30 p.m.    

The scholarship is awarded per semester. Applications are due in April. The scholarship recipient’s award goes towards defraying their account with the university. 

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be undocumented 
  • Must be enrolled at NIU (part-time students are eligible to apply)

For your application to be considered complete, you must submit:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Completed Financial and Household Certification form
  • Copy of unofficial transcript

 

CLLAS Immediate Assistance Fund for Undocumented Students

The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies Immediate Assistance Fund, which provides small grants for emergency needs for students who are ineligible for state and federal financial aid.
