Academic Misconduct and Grade Appeals

Faculty members may not issue grades in an arbitrary or capricious manner. Students may appeal grades for assignments and courses. There are different grade appeal procedures for undergraduate and graduate students:

Grade appeals are separate from but related to the academic misconduct process. Student Conduct oversees the academic misconduct process, while the academic colleges are responsible for grade appeals. Though the processes are separate, the outcome of one has the potential to affect the other.

Faculty members retain control of all grades. Student Conduct staff members and academic misconduct hearing boards may not:

  • Change grades.
  • Order grades to be changed.
  • Order students to resubmit assignments.

However, if a faculty member assigns a grade based on academic misconduct and an investigation or hearing finds the student to be "not responsible," the grade should be recalculated.
