Requirements for Healthcare Coverage
Classification Is Insurance Mandatory?
9 or More Credit Hours Yes (required to have NIU's insurance unless sponsored by your government)
Less Than 9 Credit Hours No, but strongly advised to have
J-1 Visa Holders Yes (required by law)
Fulbright Scholars Yes (required to have NIU's insurance)

All incoming international students who enroll in nine or more credit hours, are required to keep the NIU student health insurance plan their first semester unless your government sponsors you.

For all other international students, we will accept waivers with one of the following approved plans.

Dependent Coverage

Dependent coverage for spouses, domestic partners and children is available through the NIU Student Health Insurance plan by contacting Aetna directly at 800-556-1555.
