About Our Office

Our office advises international students and faculty on ways to succeed academically, socially and culturally here at Northern Illinois University. We work to keep you informed regarding the federal regulations pertaining to your status as nonimmigrants in the United States (in F, J or H status). We are here to answer your questions about the regulations and to assist you in understanding your options. Our office wants to help you with adjusting to a new culture and managing the new academic environment in the United States. We support various educational, social and cultural programming for our international students. We are here to listen to your questions and concerns, to help you find answers and to refer you to the best sources for correct information.

Our goal is to provide needed support at the beginning stage of your educational career at NIU, and then to help you learn to independently and successfully function at NIU and in the United States.

Our Mission

We enrich the experiences of international students, visitors, employees and families as they engage with the university. Our office advises and supports the university's international community with visas and social and cultural adjustment to the United States. It also acts as a liaison to relevant government agencies. We collaborate with campus partners and advocate on behalf of our populations to promote global educational exchange and diversity in support of the university's mission.
