College of Engineering and Engineering Technology Faculty, Staff and Student Awards

The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology presents awards to faculty, staff and students in recognition of their efforts and achievements.

The members of the awards committee are:

  • Sarah Cortinas
  • Purush Damodaran (chair)
  • Veysel Demir
  • Shanthi Muthuswamy
  • Ji-Chul Ryu

Nominations are due March 1. Decisions will be made by April 1.

Candidates for faculty awards are evaluated based on their accomplishments over the past two years. Recipients receive a plaque and monetary award.

Submit a Faculty Award Nomination

Outstanding Young Teacher Award

This award is given in even calendar years to recognize outstanding contributions to teaching. To qualify, a nominee must:

  • Demonstrate contributions to curriculum development and participation in teaching workshops, student evaluations and ABET assessment
  • Have held a tenure-track position in CEET for at least two years
  • Not have received the award in the past two years

Department chairs and personnel committee members can submit nominations (one per department). Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the chair or personnel committee
  • Copies of teaching evaluations with student comments
  • Other supporting documents

Outstanding Young Researcher Award

This award is given in even calendar years to recognize outstanding contributions to research. To qualify, a nominee must:

  • Demonstrate contributions to proposal submissions, funding (internal and external), publications, conference presentations and graduate student supervision on theses/projects
  • Have held a tenure-track position in CEET for at least two years
  • Not have received the award in the past two years

Department chairs and personnel committee members can submit nominations (one per department). Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the chair or personnel committee
  • Funding award notices
  • Copies of publications
  • Other supporting documents

Outstanding Teaching Award

This award is given in odd calendar years to recognize outstanding contributions to teaching. To qualify, a nominee must:

  • Demonstrate contributions to curriculum development, participation in teaching workshops, student evaluations, participation in ABET assessment and active participation in committees such as curriculum, assessment, etc.
  • Be tenured in CEET for at least three years
  • Have demonstrated consistent excellence in teaching over the past three years
  • Not have received the award in the past three years

Department chairs and personnel committee members can submit nominations (one per department). Nomination materials consist of:

  • Letter of support from the chair or personnel committee
  • Copies of teaching evaluations with student comments
  • Other supporting documents

Outstanding Research Award

This award is given in odd calendar years to recognize outstanding contributions to research. To qualify, a nominee must:

  • Demonstrate contributions to proposal submissions, funding (internal and external), publications, conference presentations, graduate student supervision on theses/projects and mentorship of junior faculty
  • Be tenured in CEET for at least three years
  • Have demonstrated consistent excellence in research over the past three years
  • Not have received the award in the past three years

Department chairs and personnel committee members can submit nominations (one per department). Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the chair or personnel committee
  • Funding award notices
  • Copies of publications
  • Other supporting documents

This award recognizes staff members who have served the college and its stakeholders above and beyond the call of duty with a focus on student success.

Submit a Staff Award Nomination

Outstanding Staff Award

To qualify, a nominee must:

  • Have demonstrated excellence in supporting students, faculty and external/internal stakeholders
  • Have served the college for at least three years as a full-time staff member
  • Not have received the award in the past three years

Faculty and chairs can submit nominations. Staff from the central advising office can be nominated by the office director or a chair. Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from a faculty member
  • Letter of support from the chair
  • One-page summary of activities from the nominee

If the nominee is from the central advising office, a letter from the office director is required, as well as one from a chair or faculty member.

Students from all CEET programs can be nominated for these awards, which recognize excellence in academic achievement.

Submit a Student Award Nomination

Outstanding Freshman Award for Academic Achievement

To qualify, a student must:

  • Be full time
  • Have completed at least 15 credit hours at NIU
  • Have a GPA greater than 3.5

The director and/or staff of the central advising office can submit nominations (no more than five). Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from central advising office staff
  • Letter of support from the central advising office director

Outstanding Sophomore Award for Academic Achievement

To qualify, a student must:

  • Be full time
  • Have completed at least 45 credit hours at NIU (15 for transfer students)
  • Have a GPA greater than 3.5
  • Participate in student organizations and/or undergraduate research programs

Faculty, chairs and the director/staff of the central advising office can submit nominations (one per department).

Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the nominator
  • Letter of support from the chair

If the chair is the nominator, a letter is required from a faculty member or the director/staff of the central advising office.

Outstanding Junior Award for Academic Achievement

To qualify, a student must:

  • Be full time
  • Have completed at least 75 credit hours at NIU (15 for transfer students)
  • Have a GPA greater than 3.5
  • Participate in student organizations, undergraduate research programs, open houses, student ambassador programs, etc.

Faculty and chairs can submit nominations (one per department). Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the nominator
  • Letter of support from the chair

If the chair is the nominator, a letter from a faculty member is required.

Outstanding Senior Award for Academic Achievement

To qualify, a student must:

  • Be full time
  • Have completed at least 95 credit hours at NIU (15 for transfer students)
  • Have a GPA greater than 3.5
  • Hold leadership positions in student organizations, attend regional conferences and participate in undergraduate research programs, open houses, student ambassador programs, etc.

Faculty and chairs can submit nominations (one per department). Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the nominator
  • Letter of support from the chair

If the chair is the nominator, a letter from a faculty member is required.

Outstanding Student Organization Award for Services and Engagement

This award recognizes a CEET student organization for efforts to support the college’s mission and vision.

To qualify, an organization should demonstrate active participation in:

  • CEET events
  • Design competitions
  • Recruitment and other student-related events/activities
  • Professional conferences (attending and presenting)

Faculty, staff and chairs can submit nominations. Nomination materials include:

  • Letter of support from the organization’s faculty advisor
  • Letter of support from the chair
