Community Engagement

NIU has so many exciting opportunities to be involved in the community - throughout DeKalb and even around the world! Our office manages many programs for undergraduate students and faculty to engage in their community and to perform rewarding service work. Learn more about our programs to find the one that's right for you!

Service-learning - Learn more about how service-learning, in general, provides you with educational, personal, social and professional benefits beyond your classroom education.

Huskie Service Scholars - This program is for new freshman and transfer students to engage in weekly service activities on-campus and in the DeKalb community.

NIU Service Leaders - This federal work-study program for sophomores, juniors and seniors gives you the chance to work with kids in local high schools, middle schools and DeKalb youth organizations.

Americorps VISTA - Volunteer to help our communities rise out of poverty.

Community Engagement Showcase - Participate in this one-day event to show off the community work that you've been doing.

Communiversity Gardens - DeKalb has several community gardens that need tending. Volunteer your time to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to the community.
