Systems Approach

 System and its Components

A system is composed of a number of components that interact with one another to accomplish a goal or a purpose. Examples of systems are automotive systems, computer systems, manufacturing systems, ecological systems, school systems, etc. Each of these systems has components that make up those systems. For example, an automotive system has a number of components such as engine, transmission, radiator, steering, etc.

A system can be broken down into a number of smaller systems called “subsystems”. For example, engine and radiator can be considered as subsystems of an automobile. The smallest part of a system is called an “element.” For example, the fan belt is an element of the radiator subsystem. A system has to have a purpose for its existence, and the purpose of an automotive system is to provide transportation.

Relationship of Systems Approach to EMS

As the name implies, EMS, is a system consisting of a number of components that interact with each other to achieve its environmental goals. The systems approach is ideal for addressing environmental management problems so that they can be analyzed and solved using this approach. The systems approach provides a logical framework that is easy to follow and apply in environmental management situations. The tools used in systems analysis are also applicable to EMS problems.
