University Writing Center Policies

Plagiarism

The University Writing Center seeks to promote and foster academic integrity alongside the NIU community. Plagiarism occurs when someone takes material from a source and uses that material in their own work without proper citation. This compromises academic integrity.

Plagiarism is considered academic misconduct (refer to Student Code of Conduct, Article III) and is subject to disciplinary action, even if unintentional. For more information about plagiarism and how to avoid it, view the related Academic Integrity tutorial.

Group Policy

To ensure fairness and to comply with university plagiarism policies, please note the following:

  • Ideally, all members of any group project need to be present for the appointment. Only material written by members present will be reviewed.
  • Once one member has made an appointment, they can share the link to that session with other members.

Late Policy

To ensure that we provide you with high-quality help, we ask you to be on time for your session. If you're more than 10 minutes late to a 60-minute appointment or five minutes late to a 30-minute appointment, your session will be canceled.

Reschedule or Cancel Appointment

If needed, you can cancel your appointment through the scheduling system. Please cancel as far in advance as you can.
