Depending on their roles at NIU, staff and faculty have different reporting responsibilities and abilities to maintain confidentiality. Disclosures of sexual misconduct to responsible employees and/or non-confidential resources may lead to the university launching an investigation into the incident, even in the absence of any identifying information.
The Ethics and Compliance Office (ECO) oversees compliance efforts across the university, including compliance in Title IX. ECO provides an independent compliance function for the university and reports regularly to the Audit and Executive Office of Provost.

Student Conduct provides an opportunity for students to address and resolve disciplinary matter. Additionally Student Conduct educates students about appropriate behavior and assist in providing a safe campus community for everyone. The Student Conduct office also administers the student conduct process and may serves as the resolution agent for Title IX incidents in which a student has been found in violation of the Title IX policy.
The resolution process involves issuing sanctions against the violator either through a process called "sanction by agreement" or through a formal administrative hearing. In accordance with the Title IX policy, the victim/survivor is consulted throughout the process and has an opportunity to participate as they survivor feel comfortable doing. Students who fall victim to a Code of Conduct violation by another student may file an incident report with the Student Conduct office for investigation and adjudication of the incident through the NIU Student Conduct process.
