Seek Medical Attention

In case of an emergency: call 9-1-1

Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital

Kishwaukee Hospital provides free emergency room medical services and evidence collection (i.e. rape kit) to victims of rape or sexual assault. However, if a victim/survivor chooses to provide health insurance information to the emergency room, the emergency room will bill the insurance company and the policy holder will be notified. The victim/survivor is not responsible for deductibles or co-pays for the emergency room visit. If health insurance is not provided, financial assistance may be provided by Kishwaukee Hospital. A sexual assault form is also required to be completed and submitted to the State.

What Happens Next

  • The victim/survivor is placed in a private room
  • Medical care is given as soon as possible
  • A NIU Advocacy Coordinator or Safe Passage Advocate is called based on a victim's preferences
  • By law, the department of NIU Police and Public Safety and/or the DeKalb Police Department are notified and the victim may choose to file a criminal report
