Outdoor Adventures

For over 35 years, Outdoor Adventures (OA) has been providing outdoor experiences for NIU students, faculty, staff as well as services for the general public.

We provide a year-round program of scheduled trips and events, a year-round rental center, and custom team building services that are available by request for organized groups. 

We believe the outdoors has something to offer everyone. We welcome you to visit our rental center, peruse our resources and get involved. Subscribe to our email list to receive updates.

Trip Financial Assistance is now available

If you would love to experience an outdoor adventure but the expense is your only barrier, we are now accepting scholarship applications. The maximum assistance available is 50 percent of the trip cost. Pick your adventure, then fill out this form.

Employment Positions with Outdoor Adventures

All positions are designated as security sensitive. In compliance with the Illinois Campus Security Act, before an offer of employment is made, the university will conduct a pre-employment background investigation which includes a criminal background check.

Adventure Center Attendants - $9.00/hour

  • Responsibilities: Renting outdoor gear to the university community; instructing individuals on the appropriate use and care of equipment; providing information on various local, regional, and national recreation locations; inspecting and repairing equipment; and completing inventory reports, performing data entry tasks, and handling cash operations.
  • CPR and First Aid certified - obtained within first semester of employment by attending scheduled trainings.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree.
  • This position is reserved for current Trip Leaders or Team Facilitators or applicants who are also interested in these positions.

Team Facilitator - $12.50/hour for facilitation $9.00/hour for prep and training

  • Responsibilities: Meet prospective groups to begin planning team workshops; assist in the final stages of planning sequences for scheduled events; prepare and organize activity equipment before scheduled events, and maintain equipment after use; Facilitate team workshops (indoor and/or outdoors) that include ice breakers, initiative and processing for diverse groups including youth and adult ranging from 4 to 30 participants; writing a workshop reports following the events; serving as a representative of Recreation and Wellness to participants; Demonstrating good judgment in regards to participant safety and well being; willing and able to work in the cold, rain, and heat, as well as good weather.
  • Requirements: NIU undergraduate or graduate student. Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role. Well organized, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual.
  • Attend an initial 4.5 hours training.
  • CPR and First Aid certified - obtained within first semester of employment by attending scheduled trainings.

Trip Leaders - $12.50/hour for leading $9.00/hour for training

  • New trip leaders receive training throughout the fall semester with a weeklong plus training trip over winter break. Responsibilities: Trip Leaders plan and lead trips for students interested in participating in outdoor recreational activities. Enthusiasm and experience in outdoor adventure is a must. Clean driving record is mandatory, if you have any moving violations you can not be employed.
  • Must be CPR/AED and Wilderness First Aid obtained within first semester of employment by attending scheduled trainings.
  • Must be currently enrolled at NIU and be progressing towards a degree.
