Counseling Services

Sometimes life can be overwhelming, especially when you are adjusting to college life. Class stress like papers, tests and projects and handling personal relationships sometimes can be too much. So it’s understandable that the NIU Police & Public Safety Department occasionally gets a call to check on a student’s well being. In this situation, we check on the student and contact the on-call counselor while we are with them. The counselor is fully trained and guides the student to any follow-up care necessary for their well-being.

Friends, family members, faculty or staff are urged to call Counseling Services if an NIU student they know is experiencing a mental health problem or having difficulty coping with current situations in their life. Simply call Counseling Services at 815-753-1206 during office hours (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) for assistance from a staff member.

After hours and on weekends, please call NIU Police at 815-753-1212 for a student who needs to speak with someone about their issues. The NIU police will meet with the student and if needed will call the on-call counselor at any time. NIU Police will follow the guidance of the counselor on call if the student needs to be admitted to a hospital because they may harm themselves or others.

This is a free service offered by trained professionals. Please don’t hesitate to call. We are happy to help facilitate in this situation
