The NIU Department of Police and Public Safety (NIU PD) began in 1920 when the first “watchman” was hired. To this day, NIU security guards have maintained similar duties and responsibilities.

Currently, NIU PD security guards fulfill several duties to maintain the safety and security of our DeKalb campus. Staying true to their lineage, the security guards still secure buildings and open classrooms. The security guards also are the helpful drivers who operate the Huskie Safe Line. They are always willing to help out and often fill additional roles such as jump starting cars, installing car seats and securing posts during special events on campus.

While security guards dress and act as professionally as our police officers, the security guards are non-sworn employees of NIU PD.
