Project Prevent and Address Bullying (PPAB)

NIU was awarded a five-year training grant from the U.S. Department of Education to train master's-level school psychologists in the area of bullying assessment, prevention and intervention. The goals for the NIU School Psychology Program's Project Prevent and Address Bullying (PPAB) for Students with Disabilities: A Multitiered Behavioral Framework are to:

  1. increase the number of high-quality, specially-trained, licensed school psychologists with unique training in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to prevent and address bullying with an emphasis on students with disabilities; and
  2. improve the developmental outcomes of students with disabilities by decreasing bullying.

The Five Grant Components

  1. Seminar

    • Scholars meet with project directors on a weekly basis.
    • The seminar provides scholars with foundational knowledge of the best practices surrounding the empirical evidence behind bullying identification, prevention, and intervention within a multi-tiered framework.
  2. Partner School Consultation

    • Scholars work with a middle school in Northern Illinois to collect data and implement intervention and prevention strategies.
    • A bi-annual survey of students and staff is conducted to collect data on bullying and school climate.
    • Scholars lead focus groups to discuss bullying from students' perspectives.
  3. Expert Consultants

    • Consultants communicate with scholars and faculty on a regular basis to discuss grant-related projects and the emerging research in the field.
    • They also make annual visits to NIU to meet with scholars and provide professional development opportunities.
  4. Professional Development

    • Scholars provide professional development trainings on bullying-related topics.
    • Trainings are developed with the goal of disseminating relevant research and empirical evidence to current school psychologists and educators in the field.
  5. Dissemination

    • The PPAB website is an aggregated source of research with handouts for different audiences (parents, students, teachers, other academics and interested parties), with a specific interest and focus on bullying prevention and intervention in regards to students with disabilities.
    • Scholar-created resources are available to the public.
