Master's Program Procedures

Procedures Notes
1. File master's program of courses. 1. Before end of first semester, usually when registering for second semester courses.
2. Appointment of thesis director and committee member(s). 2. When agreed on.
3. Register for thesis hours (699). This form required for initial registration only. Graduate secretary will obtain permission in future semesters. 3. Semester thesis work begun, with permission of adviser; credit hours determined by adviser. Continuous enrollment required until formal approval of thesis by the Graduate School.
4. Apply for conditional admission into doctoral program. Graduate secretary will notify you and provide instructions. 4. Following appointment of thesis director and completion of 30 hours. Requires area endorsement.
5. File designation of research tool.*(tool course) 5. Upon conditional admission to doctoral program.
6. Apply for IRB or IACUC participant approval. (IRB Policy and Procedures) 6. Prior to data collection.
7. File thesis proposal. 7. When approved by committee.
8. Appointment of thesis examination committee and scheduling of oral defense. 8. When thesis is completed to committee satisfaction.
9. File report of oral defense and approved thesis. Advisor provides information to graduate secretary who will submit to Graduate School. (See here for deadlines to file paperwork.) 9. When corrections in thesis made to satisfaction of examination committee.
10. Complete Foundation courses. 10. Prior to award of M.A.
11. Apply to Graduate School for graduation through MyNIU. 11. Graduation deadlines.
