David Maki

Dr. Maki is an alumnus of the NIU School of Music, earning the B.M. in music composition in 1989. He holds graduate degrees in composition from the University of Iowa (M.A.) and the University of Michigan (D.M.A). His composition teachers include Jan Bach, Lee Cloud, David Gompper, Evan Chambers, Erik Santos, James Aikman, Bright Sheng and Michael Daugherty; his piano teachers include Donald Walker and Logan Skelton.

Dr. Maki is enthusiastically involved in the classroom, teaching all levels of music theory and aural skills, as well as theory electives and private composition instruction. His diverse musical background outside of composition includes substantial performing experience as a pianist (classical, new music, jazz, lounge piano, collaborative artist, orchestral pianist) and he enjoys encouraging students to use multiple approaches in the study of all types of music.

Composition majors are challenged to study with multiple instructors as they develop a portfolio of diverse work performed live on campus.

Alumni of the program can be found throughout the United States and abroad, enrolled in high-quality graduate programs, holding university teaching positions, as well as working in film, television, and media."
