Incoming Transfer Requirements

Academic requirements for students transferring from a U.S. university

Students who have fewer than 24 credit hours from another U.S. university

Academic criteria:

  • Meet current freshman admission criteria
  • Be in good standing at the last university attended
  • Have a GPA of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale (C average) from all colleges/universities attended (as computed by NIU standards).

Students who have more than 24 credit hours from another U.S. university

Academic criteria:

  • Be in good standing at the last university attended
  • Have a GPA of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale (C average) from all colleges/universities attended (as computed by NIU standards).

Illinois public community college graduates

A graduate of an Illinois public community college who has not previously attended Northern Illinois University will be admitted to NIU with junior standing. All NIU general education requirements will be considered complete if you have the following qualifications prior to enrolling at NIU: 

  • Be in good standing at the last college attended
  • At least a "C" average (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) as calculated by the community college
  • An associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.) in a baccalaureate-oriented program.
    • Applied science degrees (A.A.S.) do not meet this requirement
  • At least 60 semester hours of credit
