On-campus Housing

NIU offers five residence halls ranging from the state-of-the-art New Residence Hall to the affordable Neptune Hall. Dining facilities are located in four of the five residence halls and meal plans are available. All residence halls have on-site laundry facilities.

The Northern View Community offers apartment-style housing for upper division students (at least 2 years past high school), graduate students, or students who have a partner or spouse and/or dependents.

You will receive a housing application after you are admitted to NIU. Be sure to fill it out and submit it, with your deposit, to NIU Housing and Residential Services in order to reserve your room. Because of the social and academic benefits on-campus living offers students, first-year students are required to live in a residence hall for the first full year

Off-campus Housing

There are many off-campus housing options in DeKalb for students in their second year and beyond. NIU does not find or place students in off-campus housing, however, there are some resources available. You can also look at a cost analysis of on- versus off-campus living to see which lifestyle is right for you (one person in one bedroom or two people in two bedrooms). The Off-Campus and Non-Traditional Student Services office offers help with finding a roommate.
