Business Careers House Leader Application

The goals of the Academic Learning Communities are to provide an engaging environment residential students where they can (1) build strong relationships with students with common interests; (2) connect with outstanding NIU faculty and staff; and (3) engage in high quality programs.

The Business Careers House is an Academic Learning Community where College of Business students have the unique opportunity to live and connect with other business students and engage in activities that promote academic success. The BCH strengthens connections between students and faculty through strategic career and academic programming. The Business Careers House is located in Grant C Tower, floors 9-12.

House Leaders serve as undergraduate program coordinators working directly with the House Coordinator. The House Leaders will play an integral role in nurturing a residential learning community among residents and to connect students to the college or student service unit. House Leaders will have an opportunity to build their own interpersonal communication and leadership skills through their role as program planners and as mentors/role-models for residents. This is a live-in position that requires approximately 15 hours/each week. Room is also provided, but House Leaders will still be responsible for their meal plan.

Primary Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Coordinate Business Careers House activities.
  • Plan programs in collaboration with other Ambassadors or with the Community Advisors (CA) in the House. All programs and activities must be approved by the faculty coordinator.
  • Participate in programs associated with the College or student service unit associated with the house.
  • Represent the House at all University Open House programs.
  • Plan service and community outreach actives.
  • Attend residence hall meetings and meet regularly with House Coordinator.
  • Other activities or responsibilities as assigned
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of Housing and Residential Services and serve as a general role model for House residents.
  • Assist with marketing efforts.
  • Lead or participate in regular meetings with other House Leaders and/or advisors
  • Be active participant in floor activities and work in cooperation and collaboration with the CA on the floor to build community among residents.

House Specific Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Contribute to the development and mission of the Business Careers House in relation to its goal setting, planning, assessment, and evaluation
  • BCH House leaders are expected to connect, introduce, and follow up with speakers
  • Each leader will have a role that includes taking minutes, creating electronic messages and flyers, keeping attendance records, or shopping and extra help as needed.

General Qualifications

  • Full-Time NIU Student
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Prior leadership experience is preferred.
  • Resume required.
  • Must be in judicial good standing with Housing and the University.

House Specific Qualifications

  • Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 at the time of application
  • Commitment to diversity and community development
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Housing and Remuneration Details

  • Single or double room, internet, and cable TV

The deadline to apply is January 31. Interviews will occur between February 1 and March 16. House Leader selections will be made by March 16. House Leader training will occur on Friday, March 23 from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
