Accessible transportation

Huskie Bus Line

The Huskie Line runs throughout campus and some areas of the DeKalb community. The buses are accessible with wheelchair lifts and tie-downs. Preferential front seating is available to persons with severe mobility and/or visual disabilities.

The Huskie Line also operates the Freedom Mobile, an accessible van providing door-to-door service to students with disabilities.

Voluntary Action Center

The Voluntary Action Center runs an accessible paratransit system during the same hours as the Huskie buses. It is an on-call door-to-door service throughout the DeKalb community. A person must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Be an NIU student, faculty or staff member (non-students pay current Huskie Bus fare per ride)
  • Have a physical disability which limits the ability to walk independently, a serious health condition requiring travel accommodations, or a visual disability severe enough to warrant the use of a white cane or guide dog during independent travel. Medical verification of such disability must be on file with the DRC.

Class-to-class transportation is not provided except for persons with severe mobility impairments or persons requiring special transportation due to a severe health condition. Class-to-class transportation is provided only during the period between Thanksgiving and Spring Break. Eligibility for this service is determined through the DRC.
