Academic Residential Camps

NIU Continuing and Professional Education offers a variety of residential summer camps for students entering grades 9-12.

Right now, we have two camps being offered: Film Camp and the Creative Writing Camp.

Film Camp

Campers entering grades 9-12
June 16-21, 2019

Do you love movies? Of course you do. But have you ever wanted to make a movie? Do you want to …

  • Be a movie director?
  • Learn cinematography?
  • Become a digital video editor?
  • Have a movie in a film festival?

If so, you will do all this and more at NIU's Film Camp. Campers will work with experienced media producers, camera operators and directors while learning about digital filmmaking from script to screen. By the end of camp, each camper will have their own group-produced movie to share with family and friends and film-festival audiences.

Here is a brief list of what campers will learn:

  • The three phases of filmmaking: preproduction, production and postproduction.
  • Writing a script.
  • Camera operation, shooting techniques and styles.
  • Cinematography.
  • Digital nonlinear editing.
  • Filmmaking production aesthetics.

Former Campers have gone on to earn some great achievements, such as winning a Chicago Film Festival CineYouth Award.

Camp Director

Michael Corvino is an instructor of media production courses at NIU and a freelance videographer. He has a master’s degree in media studies and over 15 years of production experience. He has made an award-winning documentary, music videos, athletic highlight reels, instructional videos, and worked on independent films like the 2007 Anthony Hopkins film, Slipstream, where he assisted the camera crew, including Academy-Award-Winning Cinematographer Dante Spinotti, using Panavision's Genesis HD and Panavision Film cameras.

Campers, immerse your minds in the world of creative writing! Take specialized workshops in poetry, creative nonfiction and fiction with experienced professors and instructors. Experience guest workshop leaders who have Ph.D., M.F.A. and M.A. degrees in creative writing and English. Engage with women and men who have published their works and know what it is like to put your personal thoughts down on paper, and then release them into the world.

Creative Writing Camp will offer:

  • Techniques in workshopping and criticism (or, How to Make Friends While Helping Them to be a Better Writer.)
  • Regular poetry and prose readings by staff and campers.
  • Writing and reading time.
  • Personalized advice and assistance from a variety of professionals and graduate students.
  • Personal development (What is “Style,” Anyway?)
  • The essences of oratory, slam poetry and verbal narratives.
  • Community-building.
  • A safe environment where you are free to be yourself!

The week will close with a lunch reception for campers and their families in which campers will read from their best work.
