Northern Television Center
NTC is the award-winning "nerve center" of broadcast journalism at Northern Illinois University. It is also the home of our advanced studio production facility, where we produce original local news, sports and entertainment feature programming for the DeKalb and Sycamore, IL communities.
Our signature production, "NTC News Tonight," is a 25-minute, "live" newscast recorded every Thursday afternoon. The full-length program includes a weather segment produced by meteorology students--including their own five-day forecast--and a sports segment covering NIU and high school athletic programs.
Our independent study students all do various segments of the show including political commentary “Political Pit Stop,” a look at events happening around campus called “The Huskie Trail” and a profile of an athlete of the week known as “The Leader of the Pack.”
We also give sports its own showcase in our award-winning regular feature program called "Top Shelf Sports." Each semester NTC hosts various other magazine and public affairs projects.
NTC originally served as the university's computer center back when computers were massive in scale by today's norms and required an entire building to house them. During the 1970s, the Department of Communication acquired the building and converted it into a full-scale studio production facility. Over the years, the program has grown impressively and now includes a professional Electronic News Room (ENR) system, advanced non-linear editing platforms including Final Cut Pro, an automated broadcast animation graphics system and digital studio cameras with an LCD script prompting system. Our equipment pool contains an impressive array of professional digital field cameras, wireless microphones and top-of-the-line lighting kits.
In recent years, NTC programs have received acclaim from the Illinois Broadcasters Association and we have an active chapter of Students in the Illinois News Broadcasters Association (SINBA). When we're not in the studio or the newsroom working on our next program, we are attending IBA and INBA conferences gathering insights from our colleagues at other universities and from industry professionals.
