Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity
Northern Illinois University (NIU) is committed to the concept and practice of equal opportunity (EO) and affirmative action (AA) in all aspects of employment. As a federal contractor, NIU is subject to regulatory requirements under the laws enforced by the Department of Labor's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP). The OFCCP enforces executive order 11246; section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; and the affirmative action provisions of section 4212 of the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act. Collectively, these legal mandates prohibit discrimination and require federal contractors and subcontractors to take affirmative action to ensure equal opportunities for employment, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or status as a Vietnam era or special veteran.
As part of its affirmative action efforts, Affirmative Action and Equity Compliance (AAEC) oversees the faculty, staff, and civil service search process in the areas related to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action, including analyzing data and assisting with recruitment plans to attract applicants from under-represented groups including individuals with disabilities and veterans.
NIU is a covered federal contractor or subcontractor subject to the requirements of the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), as amended and Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. As such, NIU is bound by the terms of VEVRAA and Section 503, and shall not discriminate against individuals with disabilities, and is committed to take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment protected veterans and individuals with disabilities. NIU maintains an Affirmative Action Plan for the purpose of proactively seeking employment and advancement in employment of qualified protected veterans and individuals with disabilities. Upon request, NIU will make accessible to you its Affirmative Action Plan for protected veterans and individuals with a disability. If you are interested, please submit a written request to Affirmative Action and Equity Compliance (AAEC) at rsnell@niu.edu or 1515 West Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, IL 60115. We will then schedule a time for you to review the Affirmative Action Plan.
