What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I have received many scholarships from NIU to help fund my education. Some of the scholarships that have helped me the most are the Waldeland School of Music fund and the Centennial Scholarship. I received the Waldeland scholarship for my efforts in the NIU vocal and choral programs within the School of Music.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
Growing up, I had many career aspirations, including working with animals, being a doctor and being a musician. Once I came out of my shell a bit more, I realized I had a strong passion for music. I’m now pursuing my Bachelor of Music degree in music education with an emphasis in vocal/choral education.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
I am a music education major with an emphasis in vocal/choral education. I decided I wanted to pursue this major to combine my passions for working with children and music. I have always loved teaching and music, so I decided to pursue them both in hopes of strengthening music programs in schools across the country.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The sense of community at NIU surprised me most. Even though most of my classes are in the Music Building, I’ve still become close with people who are in other majors. Everyone on campus is very welcoming and kind, no matter who you are or what you major in!

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
Yes! I often have a study group with friends for my music classes, so we can help each other do our best on exams and homework. I have met some of my best friends this way.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am a founder and on the board of NIU SNATS (Student National Association for Teachers of Singing). I have also been involved with NafME (National Association for Music Education).

What NIU offices, departments or resources have helped you feel safe, supported and successful? And how?
All of the professors/administrators in the NIU music department have supported me through my education. No matter what I'm going through, I know I can always go to them for support and guidance.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
Dr. Eric Johnson has been a very impactful professor for me. He is the director of choral activities and the voice area coordinator for the School of Music. He has been director of the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir for the past four years and was my choral conducting professor this past spring semester. Dr. Johnson makes sure to get to know each student he has, whether they’re a music major or not. He is a supportive and kind professor who goes the extra mile for all of his students. His kindness and mindset to "choose joy" everyday never goes unnoticed.

How have you benefited by attending class regularly?
Attending class regularly has helped me create relationships with my professors and stay on top of my work.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
I love sitting in the lobby of the Music Building and the Music Library! Hearing the different ensembles rehearsing throughout the day is very inspiring and can lift my mood any day.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
Trust your gut! Go where you feel is the most welcoming and right place for you. You know yourself best.

Why is a college education important to you?
A college education is important to me because it helps me further my knowledge of my passions. It also helps prepare me for my future career and foster connections in advance.

What strategies do you use to manage your time between the responsibilities of school, work, friends and family?
I schedule out my time and write it down in a planner. It helps me stay on track and visualize my workload.

How do you stay informed about events and services that are available on campus?
I check my email and see posts from NIU social media accounts.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I play with my cat at my house or go for a walk.

Please tell us about your job and hobbies.
I teach private voice and piano lessons in Sycamore. It’s a great start for my career, and I'm building connections with my community.
