I began as Director of Women’s Studies in July, 2012, after having spent 16 years as a professor in the Department of Sociology at NIU. I am inheriting a great program from the previous Director, Amy Levin, who is now the Chair of the Department of English. I am so excited to work with the excellent faculty, staff, students, and alumni in Women’s Studies.
As a sociologist, I am interested in the ways that research on, by and/or for women can transform society. Over the coming years, I intend to highlight and facilitate this kind of research done by our fabulous scholars at NIU. If you are working on a project that you want us to know about—please contact us! We want to know what you are up to.
There’s always a lot going on in Women’s Studies. Our tireless Program Coordinator, Rebekah Kohli, maintains our website, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest accounts, whereby we connect with the world—be sure to follow us on one or all of these! If you are a student, read about our undergraduate certificate, minor, contract major, and our graduate certificates, and think about pursing Women’s Studies academically. As you can see on our home page, Women’s Studies has been an asset for our alumni as they seek jobs and admission to graduate school. If you are a faculty or staff member, we welcome your participation at our events and invite you to consider applying to become a faculty associate/affiliate—check the website for details. And of course, feel free to come by our offices in Reavis any time. We are your campus partners for engendering a safe, empowering environment for everyone.
