Proficiency exams are optional. They are part of NIU's Credit by Examination program, allowing students the opportunity to acquire credit in selected areas of study for learning that occurred before enrollment at NIU. These exams are taken only once. For general information about NIU's proficiency exams, review our New Student Testing Brochure. NIU offers proficiency exams for several undergraduate-level courses (see the list below). Students can register for all proficiency exams online.
Exemption exams are also optional. NIU offers a grammar exemption exam for undergraduate English majors and minors. For students entering a master's program in the College of Business, exemption exams may waive Phase One requirements. For detailed information about each exam, click on the following links. Students can register for all exemption exams online.

The GFLRTE is for graduate students whose program of studies call for them to pass a foreign language reading translation exam. There are two levels of the GFLRTE exam - Average Proficiency and High Proficiency. Students can register for either exam online. Please review the GFLRTE brochure and GFLRTE registration form before you register for the exam online.
Please note if you need to meet a deadline: The GFLRTE is given as needed, but it takes several weeks from the date of registration until the exam has been prepared and is ready for administration. Additional time is needed for scoring and reporting results to the program office.
