Credit by Examination (CBE)

Northern Illinois University provides a variety of opportunities for new and current students enrolled at NIU to obtain college Credit by Examination (CBE).

CBE offers several advantages to new students. These advantages include allowing students to skip introductory classes and move to higher level classes, earn proficiency credit for previously mastered information, shorten the time to a degree, and save tuition dollars.

Credit may be awarded through the following programs:

  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • College-Level Examination Program (CLEP),
  • DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • NIU proficiency examinations

For a full list of exams eligible for college credit, including cut scores and corresponding NIU courses available for credit, review our CBE brochure. Additional information about CBE exams can be found in the NIU Undergraduate Catalog.

AP, CLEP, IB, and DANTES scores should be sent to the NIU Office of Testing Services. Contact Testing Services for more information about scheduling proficiency exams.
