The "Reading Teacher" endorsement has replaced the traditional 18-semester hour endorsement for "reading." Beginning in July 2005, a Reading Teacher endorsement can be earned through completion of a state-approved Reading Teacher program or completion of 24 semester hours of coursework in designated areas of study. Both of these options require completion of a practicum and passage of the state's Reading Teacher test.
NIU does not offer a separate Reading Teacher endorsement program. However, the candidates in the reading specialist certification program can be recommended for the reading teacher endorsement upon completion of 24 hours of designated coursework, including a practicum, within the specialist program. Candidates recommended for the reading teacher endorsement in this manner are required to take the reading teacher content-area test.
