Student Involvement & Leadership Development coordinates a series of comprehensive leadership development programs to help prepare students for leadership roles in our community and around the world. The programs are anchored in NIU's commitment to the community, region, and world. They include the multi-tiered NIU Leadership Academy, the NIU LEAD Summit, and the annual Kevin D. Knight Leadership Awards Ceremony.

To recognize the contributions of students to the NIU and DeKalb community, institutional tuition waivers and a variety of other leadership awards are offered and presented at the annual Kevin D. Knight Leadership Awards Ceremony every spring. Award applications are due on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 4:00 p.m (date subject to change). The 2016 Kevin D. Knight Leadership Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2016.
The Leadership Academy is a three-tiered, self-paced leadership program. In the Leadership Academy, students have the opportunity to join organizations, attend workshops, write reflections, present their learnings to others, and much more. The Leadership Academy is open to all NIU undergraduate students. Activities for the Leadership Academy are based on the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, which provides opportunities for students to enhance their learning and facilitate positive social change. By participating in the Leadership Academy, students will be able to understand and apply the 7 C’s of leadership: consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship (Komives & Wagner, 2009).

This conference is open to all NIU students interested in learning more about leadership, or who are looking to enhance their leadership skills. Students have the opportunity to attend breakout sessions, hear from a keynote speaker, and network with staff and other student leaders. The next LEAD Summit will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2015.
