About NIU STEMfest
STEMfest seeks to increase public awareness of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) initiatives, activities, careers, and education for the people of northern Illinois.
The festival is an expansion of the NIU STEM Outreach’s highly successful Spooky Science Saturday, which includes the Haunted Physics Labs and Creepy Chemistry. We provide hands-on activities, contests, and guest speakers to entertain and educate participants of all ages. In addition to more than 100 hands-on, Spooky Science displays, NIU STEM student groups showcase their projects and assist children with make-and-take activities.
In October 2010, we held our first STEMfest to celebrate innovation in the region. Now, STEMfest is a yearly event that brings together STEM educators, as well as professionals from universities, research institutions, industries, informal science organizations, and professional societies across the region to share the excitement and importance of STEM endeavors with the public.
In 2013, 450 NIU students participated in the day's events as volunteers, alongside 75 NIU faculty and staff volunteers, serving 6000 participants. 95% of children surveyed said they would tell a friend about STEMfest.
