Sex Offender Registry

The Northern Illinois University Department of Police and Public Safety takes on the responsibility of monitoring sex offenders on our campus. Sex offenders are required to notify the following police agencies if they are a NIU student or NIU employee. The sex offender must notify NIU Police, the police agency responsible for the city which the NIU campus is on and the police agency where the person resides. Sex offenders are also have restricted access from certain areas such as parks and childcare centers.

The Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act (Public Act 97-0155) requires any sex offender or sexual predator employed by or attending an institution of higher education to register with the following:

  1. campus police
  2. municipal police or county police who would respond to the campus
  3. police department in the closest jurisdiction to your residence

If you are a sex offender and will be on multiple campuses, you are responsible for making the proper notifications for each campus.

NIU DeKalb campus

If you are a Northern Illinois University student, staff or faculty member, and a sex offender, you are required by Illinois law to make notification in person within three (3) days of enrolling in classes or securing employment to the following law enforcement agencies:

  • NIU Department of Police and Public Safety
    • Register Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm in the Records Department located at 395 Wirtz Drive, DeKalb Illinois, 60115.
  • City of DeKalb Police Department
    • Register at any time in the lobby located at 700 West Lincoln Highway DeKalb, Illinois 60115.
  • Police department in the closest jurisdiction to your residence
    • Contact the officer in charge of sex offenders.

All Other NIU Campuses

If you are a Northern Illinois University student, staff or faculty member, and a sex offender who is employed or enrolled for classes exclusively at one of the Northern Illinois University regional sites, you are required by Illinois law to make notification in person within three (3) days of enrolling for classes or securing employment to the following law enforcement agencies:

NIU Hoffman Estates campus

  • NIU Department of Police and Public Safety
    • Register Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm in the Records Department located at 395 Wirtz Drive, DeKalb Illinois, 60115.
  • Hoffman Estates Police Department
    • Contact Detective Anthony Tenuto at 847-781-2869 from 3 pm until 11 pm on Monday through Friday to set up a meeting.
  • Police department in the closest jurisdiction to your residence
    • Contact the officer in charge of sex offenders.

NIU Naperville campus

  • NIU Department of Police and Public Safety
    • Register Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm in the Records Department located at 395 Wirtz Drive, DeKalb Illinois.
  • Naperville Police Department
    • Contact one of the following detectives to schedule a meeting: Detective Richard Arsenault at 630-548-2968 or Detective Erin Gibler, at 630-305-5453. The meeting will be at the Naperville Police Department located at 1350 Aurora Ave, Naperville Illinois 60540.
  • Police department in the closest jurisdiction to your residence
    • Contact the officer in charge of sex offenders.

NIU Rockford campus

  • NIU Department of Police and Public Safety
    • Register Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm in the Records Department located at 395 Wirtz Drive, DeKalb Illinois.
  • Rockford Police Department
    • Register Monday through Friday from 8 am until 7 pm in the main lobby located at 420 West State Street, Rockford Illinois 61101.
  • Police department in the closest jurisdiction you to your residence
    • Contact the officer in charge of sex offenders.

NIU Lorado Taft campus (Ogle County)

  • NIU Department of Police and Public Safety
    • Register Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm in the Records Department located at 395 Wirtz Drive, DeKalb Illinois.
  • Ogle County Sheriff’s Office
    • Register at the Ogle County Sheriff's Office located at 103 Jefferson Street Oregon, Illinois 61061.
  • Police Department in the closest jurisdiction to your residence
    • Contact the officer in charge of sex offenders.

Report Concerns

If you believe a sex offender has violated a law, please contact the police department in the area where the violation occurred. If you have a concern on the NIU campus please contact the NIU Police Department at 815-753-1212. If you would like more information regarding the list please visit the Illinois State Police website.
