President BakerBAKER REPORT: The journey has begun

Fifty years ago today, over 250,000 people marched on Washington to press for human rights. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech that day, inspiring many. Those who marched on Washington that day were on a journey; they were committed to changing the United States and the world, and they did.

This week classes began at NIU, and our students started individual journeys — each one pursuing a different path over the next few years that will shape their lives for years to come.

Our new Huskies arrive at NIU via pre-planned paths prescribed by elementary and secondary schools. And now they’re in college and part of a nationally ranked public university, charting their own course for the very first time.

NIU faculty and staff are completely dedicated to helping each student succeed in achieving their dreams — academically, socially, and in their career — and we will work hard to provide them with access to the resources necessary to accomplish their personal goals.

So as each new Huskie begins his/her journey to graduation and career success, it’s time to share and help them take advantage of the tremendous opportunities and resources available at NIU to help them shape and change our world.
