Campus Nursing and Lactation Spaces

Centers and academic units are responsible for ensuring that faculty, staff and students have access to appropriate space for nursing and pumping breastmilk when they return to campus after childbirth. Information about dedicated lactation spaces on campus can be found below.

Campus Lactation Policy

Northern Illinois University recognizes the importance of breastfeeding and supports the accommodation of mothers who choose to continue breastfeeding, nursing or expressing milk after their return to work through the NIU Workplace Breastfeeding Policy and Procedure (2009).

Requirements for Lactation Spaces

For academic units and centers creating a lactation space, a private and sanitary space is required. The following amenities are strongly encouraged:

  • Not a bathroom
  • Lock on the door to ensure privacy
  • Shielded from view
  • Access to soap and running water to clean equipment
  • Comfortable chair and close shelf or table for a breast pump
  • Electrical outlet near the chair
  • Wall clock
