Next Steps for Senior Students

As a senior, you are in your final home stretch! Congratulations! Plans for graduation and life after NIU are starting to form. This page is designed as a road map to help you accomplish the last of your tasks at NIU while preparing you for life after graduation.

Senior "Must Do" List

  • Apply for Graduation

    • All NIU Student must apply for graduation. Make sure to be aware of the deadlines. Deadlines for Spring Graduation are in the Fall semester.
  • Search For Career Opportunities:

    • Attend the NIU Job Fair to meeting with organizations and companies looking for NIU Students.
    • Meet with NIU Career Services to brush up on your interviewing skills and have them review your resume 
  • Apply for Graduate or Professional School:

    • Make sure to note application deadlines, testing schedules and other requirements. If you need assistance with this process, please do not hesitate to contact NIU Career Services
  • Meet with Your Advisor:

    • Schedule your appointment with your Academic Advisor to make sure you have completed all of your requirements. 
  • Stay Connected:

    • Check MyNIU regularly. This will allow you to see what you need to complete to be eligible to enroll, your financial statements as well as other important tasks. 
    • Check your NIU student e-mail. This is your connection with the university where important announcements and information from faculty, staff and university administrators will be sent. 
  • Get Involved on Campus!

    • This is your last year at NIU. Make the most of it and get involved.
  • Become Engaged in Your Education:

    • NIU is nationally recognized for their opportunities in engaged learning. Take advantage of these opportunities and take an active role in your education.
    • Have you developed relationships with Faculty and Staff Members who could serve as one of your professional references

 Looking Ahead

  • Learn more about NIU's Graduation Ceremonies:

    • Where do I get my cap and gown, what time is my ceremony, where does my family get their tickets. All of these questions and more can be answered by visiting NIU Commencement Ceremony website.
  • Stay Connected with NIU after Graduation:

 Key Dates and Deadlines

  • March 1st

    • This is the priority deadline for completing the FAFSA. To make sure you qualify for as much financial aid as possible, make sure to apply early.
  • January 1st - February 1st

    • This is when many of NIU's scholarship deadlines fall. This early deadline allows for students to know what scholarships they qualify for before their first semester of enrollment to NIU.
