Food & Beverages

Vending machine snacks and beverages are available at all three Outreach Centers.

NIU Naperville also hosts Arbor Vitae, an on-site deli where sandwiches, snacks and beverages can be purchased. Only vending machine snacks and beverages may be taken into the classrooms.

Library Services

NIU University Libraries

NIU students, faculty, and staff may access library services, search for materials, and place holds on some library materials by going to the University Libraries website and clicking on “Services” under the large picture.

Some of the services and collections will be based on campus and in Founders Memorial Library, but many others are available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Access to the library’s online resources from a computer not on the NIU network is established through EZproxy. This requires the entering of an NIU Novell ID and password.

Learning Resource Centers (LRCs)

Each of the Outreach Centers has a “Learning Resource Center” or “LRC”.

The LRCs have staff to assist patrons with using library resources, including requesting that library materials from NIU and other libraries be sent to an Outreach Center.

Computers are available in the LRCs to access all online library resources, as well as NIU Blackboard and email. Each LRC also has an open study area, and a machine making computer printouts and photocopies.

Collection & Services Information

The Learning Resource Center is designed to function as an electronic library relying on document delivery to fulfill the needs of students. In addition to many specialized databases, the Learning Resource Center provides access to I-Share, FirstSearch, and the internet offering a wide variety of resources for students to complete class assignments and research projects. Rapid delivery from Founders Library in DeKalb to the regional centers ensures that materials are available to meet student needs. Learning Resource Center staff members are available to assist patrons.

Reference Assistance

If you require in-depth assistance from a library subject specialist, use the library’s Ask-A-Librarian service. From this page, students can open a chat session with a librarian, send an e-mail question, or look up the subject specialist librarian in many different areas of expertise. E-mail questions are routed to a subject specialist librarian who will respond within 48 hours, Monday-Friday.

Using other Libraries

NIU students and employees may use services and resources at public university libraries in Illinois and at many private colleges and universities. NIU users are encouraged to contact libraries directly to determine borrowing policies. Many area libraries, including those at NIU, are members of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) which enables patrons to search the online catalogs of member libraries and provides library services on a reciprocal basis.

NIU OneCards

All NIU students, faculty and staff need to have a NIU OneCard in order to borrow library materials. This includes borrowing in person from any NIU or CARLI library, as well requesting that library materials be sent to an Outreach Center via Information Delivery Services. The NIU website has an online request for a photoless OneCard. Patrons can request the cards be delivered to one of the Outreach Centers (NIU Hoffman Estates, NIU Naperville, or NIU Rockford). In addition, those students who are part of a cohort group may select “NIU Outreach” as a delivery option.

Reserve Materials

Faculty members may place books and other materials on reserve at the the NIU Outreach Centers.

Requests to place materials on reserve should be submitted to:

  • Founders Memorial Library Reserves: (815) 753-9813
  • NIU Hoffman Estates: (815) 753-8830
  • NIU Naperville: (815) 753-8986
  • NIU Rockford: (815) 753-8760
