Day of Audition - What to Expect

Your audition will be held in the Music Building located at 300 Lucinda Avenue on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois.

If you are auditioning on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday –

Parking: Percussionists may begin in the Barsema Alumni & Visitor’s Center located on Annie Glidden Road and pick up a parking pass ($2.00) to park in the lots around the Music Building. After your audition, you are encouraged to go back and see their video presentation of NIU; or you may park in the Visitor’s Parking Lot ($5.00) on Carroll Avenue, just off of Lincoln Hwy. (Rt. 38). Another option is to park in the residential area just east of the Music Building (free). You are not allowed to park in the Music Building parking lots without a parking pass. You will be ticketed.

Percussion Auditions: 4:00 p.m. Meet with Lynn Slater in the Recital Hall. We will have a short meeting where we will discuss your afternoon, the audition process, scholarships, etc.

Vocalists should park only in the parking lot on the south side of the Music Building. Look for the sign that says "Art and Music Event Parking."  No pass is needed if you park here after 5 p.m., when the sign will be displayed.  If you arrive before then, please use the instructions above.

Voice Auditions: 6:00 p.m. Meet with Lynn Slater in the Recital Hall. We will have a short meeting where we will discuss your evening, the audition process, scholarships, etc.

Guitarists should park only in the parking lot on the south side of the Music Building. Look for the sign that says "Art and Music Event Parking."  No pass is needed if you park here after 5 p.m., when the sign will be displayed.

Guitar Auditions: 6:00 p.m. Meet with Lynn Slater in the Recital Hall. We will have a short meeting where we will discuss your evening, the audition process, scholarships, etc.

The remainder of your day will include:

Your instrumental or vocal audition

Tours of the Music Building

If you wish to see ensembles in rehearsals, you are welcome to arrive earlier in the day.
Percussion Ensemble, Michael Mixtacki and Greg Beyer, directors, 12:00 – 12:50 p.m.
Chamber Choir, Eric Johnson, director, 12:00 – 1:50 p.m.
Wind Ensemble, Ronnie Wooten, director, 1:00 – 2:40 p.m.
NIU Jazz Ensemble, Ron Carter, director, 3:00 – 3:50 p.m.
NIU Steelband, Liam Teague & Cliff Alexis, directors, 3:00 – 3:50 p.m.

If you are auditioning on a Friday –

 Concert Choir directed by Eric Johnson
 Wind Ensemble directed by Ronnie Wooten
 NIU Philharmonic directed by Lucia Matos

If you are auditioning on a Saturday –

Parking: You may park in any of the parking lots surrounding the Music Building. No parking passes needed.

 9 a.m. Welcome meeting in the Concert Hall. Pick up your audition packet in the CH lobby, and then head into the Concert Hall. We will have a short meeting where we will discuss your morning, the audition process, scholarships, etc.

The remainder of your day will include:

Your instrumental or vocal audition

Tours of the Music Building

Walking tours of campus

Tours of the Fine Arts House
