String students at Northern Illinois University enjoy a wide variety of instructional and ensemble opportunities. Performance majors with a primary instrument of violin study privately with Mathias Tacke, Blaise Magniere, or Marie Wang. Violists study with Richard Young or Anthony Devroye, and cellists study with Cheng-Hou Lee. Classical string bass students study with John Floeter, and jazz string bass students study with Kelly Sill. Violin and viola students majoring in music education study with Ann Montzka.
Bachelor's degree options include Performance, Music Education, Composition, and the Bachelor of Arts in Music. Master of Music programs are available in Performance, the Individualized specialization, and Music Education. We also offer the post-master's Performer's Certificate.
Applied string instrument instruction is provided in a variety of private and group settings. In addition to several chamber groups featuring string instruments, students audition for and participate in the NIU Philharmonic. String students may also participate in the Campus String Orchestra, which combines for concerts with the regional Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
