Graduate Assistantships, Tuition Waivers and Fellowships
Assistantships are awarded in all areas on the basis of merit and School of Music needs. Assistants will have assigned responsibilities occupying from 10 to 20 hours weekly, including, where relevant, participation in School of Music ensembles. Please submit the graduate assistantship application to the School of Music coordinator of graduate studies.
Assistantships include a monthly stipend for nine months plus a tuition waiver. These awards do not cover non-instructional tuition costs, which may be as much as $1,900 per term.
Northern Illinois University is an AA/EEO employer. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.
Graduate Tuition Waivers
Tuition waiver awards are offered in the following categories: recruitment, artistic talent, underrepresented minorities and McNair scholars. These awards waive up to a maximum of 9 semester hours of instructional tuition each semester. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for all types of waivers for which they are eligible. The deadline for fall applications is early February for recruitment, underrepresented minority and McNair tuition waivers. Only admitted applicants can be awarded tuition waivers. Questions regarding tuition waivers can be directed to the coordinator of graduate studies.
The university offers various competitive fellowship opportunities. Music students have been successful fellowship recipients.
Please note: Tuition waivers cover only the cost of instruction, not institutional fees. For more information, please see the NIU Planning & Cost Estimator.
