Featured Adult Learner: Peggy Hayes
Peggy Hayes is a post-traditional student who works in the Student Association Office. Peggy is the Student Association Office Support and Huskie Link contact. She is completing her Bachelor of General Studies degree. She thinks that the B.G.S. degree program is good for post-traditional students because it is flexible. According to the program’s website, “the program is tailored to the needs of adult returning students who’s personal and work obligations preclude their enrolling as full-time day students on the DeKalb campus.”
Hays, who expects to graduate in December 2018, resides in Sycamore, Ill., and considers NIU a part of her family tradition. Her oldest son played football at NIU. Her daughter is part of the dance team and her mom is an alumni. Her youngest son who is in high school wants to attend NIU in the future and play football. Peggy has always been a fan of the athletic side of NIU.
Additionally, she loves NIU because she gets to work with college students. She is a people person who encourages others and loves to hear other people’s stories. Outside of NIU, she likes to spend time outdoors, run and exercise. She distresses by writing and journaling. She definitely considers herself an extrovert. Her tip to new students is to be involved. “New students may get lost on campus because offices and resources are not all in one building and spaces can be fragmented,” Hayes said. “Try to visit every single building on campus just to say you did it! Non-traditional students may have a shorter period of time and/or may have to plan involvement into schedules, but it’s worth it you will feel a more part of campus.”
Fun Fact: Peggy’s favorite type of music is house music.
