Welcome!

Northern Illinois University has been home to a vibrant community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender individuals and our allies since 1970, when our first queer student organization was founded on campus.

In the years since those first brave students stepped out into the open, many dedicated students, faculty, and staff have built on their legacy, moving NIU forward to become one of the most LGBT-friendly campuses in the nation, as recognized by NIU’s inclusion in The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students.

Northern Illinois University recognizes the unique concerns of students, faculty, and staff who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT). Since 1992, NIU has been taking formal steps to foster a university climate that supports the academic and professional success as well as personal well-being of the LGBT members of our university community.

Through our LGBT Resource Center, LGBT Studies Program, and Presidential Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, we offer a variety of programs, services, and activities to serve the needs of individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender as well as for the benefit and enrichment of the entire campus.
