Professor Rigertas to Speak at Symposium on Future of Legal Profession
On November 14, 2014, Professor Laurel Rigertas will participate in the "Symposium on the Future of the Legal Profession and Legal Education" at Indiana Tech Law School in Fort Wayne, IN. Professor Rigertas will sit on a panel called "The Future of Access to Legal Services in a Changing Legal Market."
NIU Law Students Inspired to Form Professionalism and Ethics Society Featured in Chicago Daily Law Bulletin
Professor Laurel Rigertas was interviewed in a feature article by Jack Silverstein of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin on September 5, 2014. The article highlighted Professor Rigertas' coordination of the Murer Series on Professionalism, an endowed lecture program that brings prominent attorneys, judges and other distinguished figures to NIU Law to speak to first-year students about professionalism and ethics. Professor Rigertas talks about the importance of the series and the increased involvement of the newly-created student organization, the Professionalism and Ethics Society, in shaping the lectures this year.
Professor Rigertas Publishes Article in Fordham Law Review
Professor Laurel Rigertas has written an article published in the May 2014 edition of the Fordham Law Review. It is entitled "The Legal Profession's Monopoly: Failing to Protect Consumers." It addresses the growing problem of consumers not having access to legal services thanks in large part to the restriction of legal practice to only licensed attorneys.
Rigertas Featured at Symposium on Legal Malpractice and Ethics
Professor Laurel Rigertas will give a talk entitled "How Do You Rate Your Lawyer?: Lawyers’ Responses to Online Reviews of Their Services" during the 13th Annual Symposium on Legal Malpractice and Ethics hosted by the St. Mary's Law Journal. Her presentation will take place at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, February 28th at the Plaza Club (in the Frost Bank Building) in San Antonio, Texas.
Professor Rigertas to Speak at Access to Justice Conference
Professor Laurel Rigertas will be a featured panel speaker at "Until Civil Gideon: Expanding Access to Justice," a conference sponsored by the Fordham University School of Law, on Friday, November 1, 2013. Professor Rigertas will be a part of the first panel of the day on the role of non-lawyers at 10:30 a.m. The conference will take place at Fordham University -- 113 West 60th Street in New York City.
Professor Rigertas to Participate in Colloquium on Practice of Law
Professor Laurel Rigertas will be participating in "The Legal Profession's Monopoly on the Practice of Law," a colloquium sponsored by the Stein Center for Law and Ethics and the Fordham Law Review, on October 18, 2013 at the Fordham University Law School.
Professor Rigertas Featured in Chicago Lawyer's Women in the Law 2013
Professor Laurel Rigertas was the subject of a profile in the 2013 Women in the Law issue of Chicago Lawyer magazine. The feature highlighted Professor Rigertas' commitment to ethics and professionalism as core concepts of the curriculum at the College of Law.
Professor Rigertas Participates in Roundtable on Supreme Court Ethics
Professor Laurel Rigertas was chosen to be part of a scholarly roundtable discussion as part of the Tabor Institute on Legal Ethics' annual lecture series, hosted by Valparaiso University Law School. This year's lecture series focused on Supreme Court ethics. Professor Rigertas was joined in the roundtable by Professor Barry Sullivan of Loyola University Chicago School of Law and Professor Kevin Hopkins of John Marshall Law School. The roundtable was held on Friday, October 19, following the annual Tabor Lecture by Professor Steven Lubet of Northwestern University Law School. The event took place at Wesemann Hall on the Valparaiso University campus.
Professor Laurel Rigertas Cited as Legal Ethics Expert by Los Angeles Times
Professor Rigertas was cited as a legal ethics expert in an article in the June 17, 2012 Los Angeles Times. The article, written by Carol J. Williams, details the rolling back and elimination of reforms instituted in the wake of the Watergate scandal 40 years ago. Professor Rigertas was paraphrased as saying, "Broad divergence remains among state and local bar associations on when or whether members are obliged to reveal information about criminal acts disclosed by their clients."
