Northern Illinois University College of Law Cords Policy

Honor Cords

Students who receive honors awarded by NIU COL based on GPA will be listed in the Commencement program and may wear an approved gold cord during Commencement ceremonies, which the school will provide. These honors include: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude.

Racial or Ethnic Stoles/Sashes

Students who wish to represent their racial/ethnic background may wear the appropriate stole/sash during the Commencement ceremony.

Student Organization Cords

Students who are members of a recognized NIU COL student organization during their studies at NIU COL may choose to wear one (1) approved cord representing that organization during the Commencement ceremony.


1)      Student organizations must be officially recognized by NIU COL; see full list below.

2)      The school will provide student organizations with the appropriate colored cord for their organization’s members to be represented during Commencement ceremonies.

3)      No more than one (1) student organization cord, one (1) honor cord, and one (1) racial or ethnic stole/sash may be worn during the Commencement ceremony.
