Scholarships and Grants

We offer several annual competitive faculty associate research and travel grants. We also offer research and travel conference grants for graduate students. We promote the Student Engagement Fund, which brings faculty associates and undergraduates together in collaborative research projects.

In addition, we offer other awards and scholarships.

The Robert Marcelin Memorial Scholarship is a $500 scholarship endowed by the former Ameritech Corporation to honor the life and memory of their co-worker and former Northern Illinois University student, Robert Marcelin. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide assistance to an NIU undergraduate student with at least one Latino/a parent.

The scholarship is awarded annually. The scholarship recipient's award goes towards defraying their account with the University unless no monies are owed. This is a merit-based scholarship.

The application deadline is Friday, March 1, 2024, and the recipient is announced in May.

Eligibility Criteria

You must meet the following requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA or better
  • Enrolled full-time at NIU
  • Must be able to demonstrate progress towards degree completion

Application Submission

For your application to be considered complete, you must submit:

  • Complete and signed application
  • Submit a two-page personal statement
    • Include your engagement with the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies (CLLAS)
  • Unofficial transcript

Marcelin Scholarship Application

The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) Undergraduate Scholarship is a $500 scholarship for a student with a declared minor in Latino and Latin American Studies.

The scholarship is awarded annually. The scholarship recipient's award goes towards defraying their account with the university unless no monies are owed.

The scholarship is currently unavailable.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a declared minor in Latino and Latin American Studies
  • 3.0 GPA or better
  • Enrolled full-time at NIU
  • Able to demonstrate progress towards degree completion

Application Submission

For your application to be considered complete, you must submit:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Copy of unofficial transcript
  • Statement of interest in the minor and engagement with CLLAS.
  • One confidential letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with your work as a student and interest in Latino and Latin American Studies
