Citrix FAQs
What is Citrix?
Citrix enables applications, which run on servers, to be presented to a networked device such as a desktop, laptop, smartphone, or tablet, and appear as if they are installed and running on the local device. Citrix based applications are accessed using a network connection and a web-browser (see below for supported web-browsers and settings)
- Programs in Citrix are available on nearly any platform with a web-browser. This includes Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhones/iPods/iPads, most smartphones and most tablets. Citrix can be accessed from over 1 Billion devices!
- Programs in Citrix are available on and off of campus. NIU College of Business computer labs are equipped with the Citrix online plug-in so you can navigate to https://myapps.niu.edu/ and get to all of your applications immediately. When connecting from a personal device for the first time you still visit https://myapps.niu.edu/where you will be prompted to download and install the Citrix online plug-in. For setting up other wireless devices please see below.
- Since Citrix programs run on a server you can use compute intensive applications on standard “commodity” endpoint hardware. For example, you can run Photoshop on your Droid.
- Access to Citrix applications is assigned based on your course enrollment. If you are enrolled in a course that requires an application in Citrix, we ensure that you get those applications whenever and wherever you need them. All students enrolled in a College of Business course have access to all Citrix applications.
Prerequisites:
- Enrollment in a Citrix associated course. Currently that includes all ACCY, FINA, MKTG, MGMT, OMIS courses.
- A Citrix supported web-browser. See below for list of supported web-browsers
Connecting:
From your computer:
- Using a supported browser with the appropriate security settings (see below for browsers and settings)
- Visit https://myapps.niu.edu/
- Citrix requires a small program to be installed on the device connecting to Citrix. The program is called the Citrix online plug-in. You will be prompted to download and install the online plug-in the first time your Windows or Mac computer visits https://myapps.niu.edu/.
- Once you download and install the plug-in, you can login with with your NIU Z-ID and password
From a lab computer:
- Visit https://MyApps.Niu.Edu
- The Citrix online plug-in has been pre-installed in College of Business computer labs (and most labs throughout campus), Citrix will detect this. If you are prompted to install the receiver, please notify the lab attendant of the issue and pick another station. ITS will fix the plugin on this station for future use.
- Login with your NIU Z-ID and password

You have multiple options for saving files in Citrix
1. Citrix "I" drive - This spot is only available in Citrix, but can be accessed from wherever you login to Citrix.

2. USB. When you plug in your USB drive to your personal computer, or a lab computer, you will be presented with this prompt to give permission to a remote application. Click yes to access your USB drive from Citrix. Note: USB drives are the preferable method of transporting your files from location to location.

3. Local computer drives (if running from laptop or home computer). For example, the C drive from your Windows computer will be an option to access files. This option will be labeled "Local Disk (C: on XYZ)" where XYZ is the name of your computer.
4. H drive, if running from a COB lab. If you're logged into a COB lab, Citrix will see the H drive.
Depending on load and network connectivity, a Citrix application can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2-3 minutes to load. Most of this time is consumed by Citrix creating your session. In most cases, if you open a second application in Citrix ,it will load instantly. You should see these signs letting you know Citrix is still working on loading your app.

When this message box disappears, keep an eye out for this icon in your taskbar.

On occasion you might see an error message in Citrix when trying to save or open files. This is the servers way of telling the application that it can't access the server file system. All these messages can be IGNORED.
Here are some samples error messages
