Sending Mass Email at NIU
Mass
emails are just one way to share information with the campus community. NIU
Today and the NIU Calendar should meet most needs for promoting news and events
to the entire campus.
News
and program information should be submitted to NIU Today, the university’s news and
information blog. Events and deadlines should be posted to the NIU Calendar, as well as to NIU Today. To submit
a request to NIU Today, email niutoday@niu.edu.
To submit a calendar item, complete the form at calendar.niu.edu/event/create.
Mass
emails can be an effective tool for communicating with targeted groups of
students and/or employees. Approval is required for a message that is to be
distributed to more than 100 recipients outside of the sender’s area of
responsibility. The Office of Communications and Marketing
processes mass email requests and can recommend appropriate distribution
mechanisms.
If
your message has less than 100 recipients, you can send it yourself through the
university’s email system provided you follow the university’s mass mail
requirements as outlined in the Electronic Mail
Policy.
Federal Regulations
The CAN-SPAM Act applies
to NIU e-mail regardless of the number of intended recipients if:
- the content is of a commercial nature
- there is no prior relationship with the recipients
See the summary of CAN-SPAM as
it applies to NIU email for details regarding opt-out ability,
the return address and valid e-mail information.
