Product Overview:

SQL Server

With SQL Server, Microsoft offers the following licensing options:

  • Core-based Licensing for Enterprise
  • Server + CAL licensing for Business Intelligence
  • Choice of core-based licensing or Server + CAL licensing for Standard
  • Users/devices that are accessing information or services of the SQL server, either directly or indirectly, they need licensed access for SQL. The Core License Model alleviates any CAL requirements, which is ideal in extranet scenarios.

If you were to license the physical server, you must license all the cores in the server with a minimum of 4 core licenses required for each physical processor in the server.

    How to license:

    1. License all of the physical cores on the hardware

    2. A minimum of 4 core licenses are required per physical processor

  • IF YOU HAVE 1 PHYSICAL CORES IN THE PROCESSOR, 4 CORE LICENSES ARE REQUIRED.
  • IF YOU HAVE 2 PHYSICAL CORES IN THE PROCESSOR, 4 CORE LICENSES ARE REQUIRED.
  • IF YOU HAVE 4 PHYSICAL CORES IN THE PROCESSOR, 4 CORE LICENSES ARE REQUIRED.
  • IF YOU HAVE 6 PHYSICAL CORES IN THE PROCESSOR, 6 CORE LICENSES ARE REQUIRED.
  • IF YOU HAVE 8 PHYSICAL CORES IN THE PROCESSOR, 8 CORE LICENSES ARE REQUIRED.

In addition to the installation rights for the actual server software, the Core license grants any number (unlimited) of devices or users the right to access and use the server software running on those processors. With the SQL Core model - there are 2 options for licensing: Option # 1 If you were to license the physical server, you must license all the cores in the server with a minimum of 4 core licenses required for each physical processor in the server. How to license 1. License all of the physical cores on the hardware 2. A minimum of 4 core licenses are required per physical processor PHYSICAL CORES IN THE PROCESSOR: 1 2 4 6 8 CORE LICENSES REQUIRED 4 4 4 6 8 Option #2 To license a VM with core licenses, you would purchase a core license for each virtual core (virtual thread) allocated to the virtual machine (minimum of 4 core licenses per VM). **What this breaks down to is each VM requires 2 licenses**
