In March 2011, DeKalb County was one of 11 counties in Northern Illinois with an unemployment rate over 8.1%. Unemployment rates may be declining, but Illinoisans still struggle to provide for their families.
Feeding America data supports the need to assist individuals living in poverty in northern Illinois where The Northern Illinois Food Bank alone serves 502,400 people each year; 48% of the households served have children under the age of 18.
Of people residing in DeKalb County, 15% are in poverty; children under 18 are 12% of that population, and 4% are age 65 or over.
