On-Campus Housing

NIU offers five residence halls ranging from the state-of-the-art New Residence Hall to the affordable Neptune Hall. Dining facilities are located in four of the five residence halls and meal plans are available. All residence halls have on-site laundry facilities.

The Northern View Community offers apartment-style housing for upper division students (at least 2 years past high school), graduate students, or students who have a partner or spouse and/or dependents.

You will receive a housing application after you are admitted to NIU. Be sure to fill it out and submit it, with your deposit, to NIU Housing & Residential Services in order to reserve your room. Because of the social and academic benefits on-campus living offers students, first-year students are required to live in a residence hall for the first full year

Off-Campus Housing

There are many off-campus housing options in DeKalb for students in their second year and beyond. NIU does not find or place students in off-campus housing, however, there are some resources available. You can also look at a cost analysis of on- versus off-campus living to see which lifestyle is right for you (one person in one bedroom or two people in two bedrooms). The Off-Campus and Non-Traditional Student Services office offers help with finding a roommate.
